MBC’s “The Great Seducer” has been in headlines ever since it began airing for a variety of reasons.
Ahead of its premiere, it gained attention for being rising star Woo Do Hwan first EVER leading role, it is also another Korean adaptation of the 18th century French novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
After it aired, it gained attention for other reasons, one of them was Red Velvet’s Joy acting capabilities. Some hated it and some liked it, some continue to watch the drama because of her; others opted out because of her (among other reasons).
If you follow my blog you already know how I feel about Red Velvet’s Joy acting abilities. When I wrote about the news of her casting, I was immediately disheartened and sad; I already knew it was going to suck (her acting)! #sorrynotsorry
I have watched the first two episodes of “The Liar and his Lover,” back then I was so vocal about Joy’s performance and the casting choice, I was very annoyed and taken back, why you ask? Because I am a kdrama fan, that’s why.
As a kdrama fan, I am always annoyed when directors cast inexperienced hot popular good looking idols in leading roles; Joy was one of the worst cases I have seen in recent years.
The young woman doesn’t even have any experience prior to “The Liar and his Lover,” I googled everywhere to find whether she had been in anything prior to that, I didn’t find any. Not even a web drama, NOT EVEN A WEB DRAMA.
I like Woo Do Hwan, Moon Ga Young and Kim Min Jae, they’re all very young talented actors who have been slowly but steadily climbing the success ladder, they’re all very skilled despite their young age.
This is why Joy doesn’t fit, Joy isn’t on the same level, it will take her a while before she gets there.
You’ve probably heard the news already if you’re reading this article; the fact that MBC’s “The Great Seducer” is the lowest rated drama in MBC’s history and the second lowest rated drama among all major broadcasting stations (excluding paid broadcasting stations such as tvN or OCN).
This is a fucking disaster (sorry for my French!). I was so angry and sad, I felt so sad for everyone involved in this production including Joy. By no means I will put all the blame on a 22 year old rookie actress, because that’s just wrong, but this doesn’t mean that Joy is not one of the reasons this drama ratings suck, she is not all of it, but a part of it.
The topic of why this drama has low ratings will be discussed in a different article, I plan on writing it within the next couple of days (keep an eye on the blog), for now lets discuss Joy’s acting.
Joy is very very inexperienced, this is not a diss but the truth, I think we can all agree on that.
This is because she hasn’t been in many acting projects, and has only started back in 2017; she has no theatre experience, no web drama experience, basically nothing under her belt but her aspiration to become an actress (I believe).
This is a huge problem, because unless you’re talented as fuck there is no way you can match Woo Do Hwan, Moon Ga Young and Kim Min Jae’s performances. The main problem isn’t that she is terribly bad but that she is not on the same level not even close, she is far far away.
Comparisons between her and Moon Ga Young were bound to happen. Among the four main leads, Moon Ga Young is the one with the most experience, she is only 22 years old but has been acting since 2006, she was a child actress who slowly but steadily proven herself to be worthy.
She went from playing the young sweet version of the female lead to the rebellious teenager and then to the capable fierce young woman she is right now, I have seen her grow before my eyes and she shines so beautifully.
Joy is a performer, a singer in a Kpop group. She has on-screen presence and knows how to perform but that doesn’t mean it will necessary translate into good acting in kdramas. Both are very very different things.
I explained why I was so upset with the casting choice back then, people bashed me and told me to see and judge for myself. Being someone (and I say that humbly) who watches kdramas too much, my opinion didn’t change and those people made me laugh.
Joy won’t suddenly know how to act in the short span of 6-9 months, it won’t happen, it takes time and patience and you need to learn, it also pays if you’re talented.
Who’s fault is this?
Joy should have never led this drama; I don’t know what were the directors thinking of, were they high? Drunk? Or even worse, blinded by SM Entertainment power? I don’t know how stupid you must be to choose Joy to lead your drama, you must be very stupid.
I am not gonna sit here behind my desk and blast Joy for choosing to lead this drama, because she is a part of SM Entertainment if you know what I mean.
This means that I know well that it might not have even been entirely her choice (I am speculating not stating the facts, please be ware).
SM controls their artists every movement, Red Velvet are still relatively young and only now leaving their foot print on Kpop music scene, SM is very careful with the way they present the ladies and market them. This is why this could have been SM’s suggestion or worse, the casting directors suggestion.
Joy might have not had a lot to say about this, its not like any SM artist can easily put their feet down and refuse something SM asks for, we all know that, especially not a newbie.
This is why I am going to blame whoever cast her, I don’t know who you are, but you’re insensitive, or worse, actually thought she could act, it hurts my brain thinking about your mistake.
How could you cast Joy? What were you thinking? How could you agree? How could anyone with any sense have agreed to this? Who made this decision?
I am an aspiring writer but I’d rather never make my debut than have Joy act in it, or for that matter of fact any newbie inexperienced idol act in it, why? Because I have respect for myself and for everyone that will be involved in this production, if you’re going work hard make sure you have the right team with you, so you don’t waste your and their time.
Let’s not waste each other’s time, how about that?
I feel so sorry for everyone involved in this production because Joy is leading the damn drama, the lead female cannot act and is not up to par with everyone around her.
While senior experienced actors give their all, there is Joy, who still can’t stop making this fucking face. What are you doing? Are you sad? Mad? Conflicted? Annoyed?
I don’t know, I don’t know!
Joy has many problems with her acting, one of it is her winking, excessive winking which she actually toned down for this drama and her facial expressions, they’re lacking, too lacking. I don’t understand what she means by them.
I never felt like she was the character she was supposed to be playing, like an out of body experience or something, it’s like here is Joy is in a place and her character she is some place else, far far away.
This is the best I can describe her acting. That I don’t relate to her, I don’t sympathize with her, I feel so detached and don’t understand what she means by some of her facial expressions.
When she is in the same frame as Moon Ga Young its even more obvious how much she’s lacking. Its like everybody knows what they’re doing except for her, I feel so bad for her. What are you doing SM?
Why would you put her in this production? such a heavy topic which she clearly isn’t cut out for, among very very experienced actors who only make her look more lacking, except for actress Jeong Ha Dam, her acting is soooo bad, she is actually the only actress on the show that make Joy’s acting look good.
Jeong Ha Dam deserves a segment of her own, I was so shocked when I saw how bad she was, worse than Joy, I don’t even know why isn’t anyone talking about how bad she is!!
Let’s get back to Joy, we’ll leave Jeong Ha Dam alone for now!
I am all in for people who try and fail and keep trying, but not like that. I don’t mean to hate on Joy because I fucking love her, she has the sweetest voice and is so cute in real life, I saw her performances, she is so good.
I am not hating on her as a person but on the craft itself, I have no right to attack her as a person, but I think I can talk about her acting and her drama, since she is promoting a product for public consumption.
Where is the respect?
I feel that there needs to be respect, respect for those who try so damn hard to get a role but an idol from a popular agency and/or idol group gets it without even trying.
Woo Do Hwan, Moon Ga Young and Kim Min Jae worked so damn hard to nail those roles and it took them years before they landed first and second lead roles, years!
I don’t want to start a debate (or do I?) about Moon Ga Young and Joy but I would be so pissed if I were Moon Ga Young.
This is not about jealousy or low self-esteem or girls’ pillow fight but about justice within the system.
Moon Ga Young has been acting forever, and made her movie debut in 2006 and her first drama project was in 2007, she played so many backup minor roles for so long and slowly climbed her way up.
What right does Joy have to come and claim a first leading role when there is someone way more talented than her? Why does Moon Ga Young step back and take the second leading role?
Do you get me?
I don’t want to be bitter but if I were Moon Ga Young I would be so damn pissed. If Joy was doing a good job, we wouldn’t be having this discussion!
If she were talented I’d be happy she got the role because I am all about underdogs going places fast, not people with good connections going places fast!
Lets take those two actresses for example:
Kim Go Eun and Kim Tae Ri both led roles as their first acting project but no one complained, why you ask? Because they auditioned fair and square among hundreds other aspiring actors.
Kim Tae Ri was picked out of 1500 actress who auditioned for the legendary movie “The Handmaiden,” I watched it and I couldn’t believe it was her first acting project, I was so stunned, I thought my eyes played tricks on me when I saw she had no other credits to her name.
Prejudice among idol actors
Is there any prejudice against idol actors? Yes,
Is it justified? Yes! It sure is!
Why? Because of such projects like “The Great Seducer,” they made people so skeptic of idols acting.
Are there good idol actors? There sure are, some of my favorite actors happen to be idols.
Joy can become a great actress but not like that, not by pushing her to the front line so defendless to be brutally attacked by everyone including yours truly. (meeee)
She should have started from the rear end, not because she needs to be belittled and go through the same process like everybody else but because she needs to learn and absorb from all her sunbaes, who can help her become a great actress.
She has it in her but she is lacking, putting her like that in a leading role won’t necessary make her better.
After heavily roasting the cutie Joy I have a few closing remarks.
I still don’t believe that Joy is too terrible or that the drama is a flop because of her, its stupid of me to assume that, there are many reasons why “The Great Seducer” is getting such low ratings.
Its sad because with all honesty, I don’t think it deserves the 2%, its bad don’t get me wrong but 2% is too low.
Being a kdrama in the 1% ratings range is very very bad for everyone involved in the project. I feel so bad for all the actors who woke up today to Nielsen Korea releasing the ratings news, it must be so discouraging to wake up to such terrible news.
Thank you so much for reading my rant, excuse me if I swore here and there but its only because I am passionate about kdramas, I cannot just play it cool. When I see injustice, I call it out.
I know this article will get hate but that’s okay, to all those who enjoy Joy’s performance I am happy for you; at least you’re enjoying it, some of us were struggling and eventually quit because it was unbearable.
Now that I am done, I wanna hear your opinion. Do you agree or disagree? Lets discuss in the comment section below!
