Agency Left Scrambling After Its Actor Jang Dong Joo Unilaterally Announces Retirement From The Industry
Actor Jang Dong Joo is facing further controversy after it was revealed that he announced his sudden retirement without any prior discussion or consultation with his agency.
On the 17th of May, his agency Management W stated regarding his retirement announcement, “This was a unilateral decision made solely by the actor himself. The agency was not informed in advance and only became aware of the situation after the announcement was made.”
They continued, “This is a highly irresponsible act that violates the responsibilities and trust expected of an actor under contract. We make it clear that the responsibility for the resulting confusion and damage lies entirely with the actor.”
The agency added, “We are currently doing our best to resolve issues with partners and related parties affected by the actor’s independent decision, and we are responding to the matter with a serious stance. At this point, we believe the trust relationship with Jang Dong Joo has reached a level that is effectively irreparable.”
They also stated that they will carefully review all matters, including whether to maintain the exclusive contract.
Jang Dong Joo posted on his personal SNS on the 15th of May, announcing his sudden retirement, saying, “I am stepping away from my life as an actor Jang Dong Joo starting today.”
His abrupt actions have been ongoing since last November, when he disappeared from contact after posting a brief “I’m sorry” message, causing concern among those around him.
He later revealed that he had been a victim of phone hacking and blackmail, and claimed he was burdened with tens of billions of won in debt as a result. During this period, he changed agencies twice and signed an exclusive contract with Management W in February, expressing his determination to restart his career.
In fact, in a recent exclusive interview after joining Management W, he said, “I was often told that in acting, it’s not the most talented who survive, but the one who endures to the end. Whether I succeed or fail, I want to remain an actor who keeps acting.”
Management W was aware of his difficult circumstances but still supported him. However, Jang Dong Joo announced his retirement unilaterally without even minimal consultation, drawing strong criticism.
There have also been rumors surrounding disputes over expensive entertainment-related expenses. Amid various allegations surrounding him, Jang Dong Joo has continued his solo activities, including appearing on a TikTok live broadcast.
