Beloved Korean Veteran Director Jung Jin Woo Passes Away
Director Jung Jin Woo, who left behind representative works such as “Does the Cuckoo Cry at Night” and “The Rose of Sharon Has Bloomed,” has passed away. He was 88 years old.
According to the film industry and the bereaved family, Director Jung passed away at around 8 p.m. on the 8th of February at a nursing hospital in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
The deceased reportedly suffered a fall accident about two months ago while walking his pet dog and received inpatient treatment at a university hospital. Afterward, he contracted COVID-19 and was unable to recover his health. Just before his passing, his lifelong friend Director Im Kwon Taek and Dong-A Export Corporation Chairman Lee Woo Seok visited to say their final goodbyes.
In 1962, at the age of 24, the deceased debuted as the youngest director in Korea at the time by directing the film “Only Son,” starring Choi Moo Ryong and Kim Ji Mi. The following year, he directed “Betrayal,” starring Shin Sung Il and Um Aeng Ran, and later presented works such as “The Last Crown Prince Yeongchinwang” and “Dongchun” in 1970.
The deceased’s representative work is “Does the Cuckoo Cry at Night,” released in 1980. With this work, he swept nine categories including Best Actress, Best Actor, and Cinematography at the 19th Grand Bell Awards, and the following year, “I Cried in the Body of a Parrot” achieved six awards at the 20th Grand Bell Awards.
In addition, he led the establishment of the Korean Film Directors Association in 1967 and the Film Welfare Foundation in 1984, taking the lead in improving the rights and interests of film professionals. He also worked in various areas of the film industry, including establishing the multiplex theater Cine House in 1989.
The bereaved family includes his wife and one son and two daughters. The funeral hall will be set up on the morning of the 9th at Room 20 of the funeral hall at Samsung Seoul Hospital in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The funeral procession will be held at 8 a.m. on the 11th, and the burial site is Seoul Memorial Park.
