The Newest Hit tvN Drama Hit With Backlash For Writing Error During Drama’s Broadcast, Production Team Apologizes
tvN newest drama “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty,” has been embroiled in controversy due to a Chinese character writing error during its broadcast.
The problematic scene appeared in episode 1, aired on the 23rd of August. In the scene where Yeon Ji Young (Im Yoona) and Lee Heon (Lee Chaemin) appear after time-slipping to the Joseon era, the phrase ‘Taepyeongseongdae (太平聖代)’ on a flag was mistakenly written using ‘dae (大)’ meaning ‘big’ instead of ‘dae (代)’ meaning ‘generation.’
Immediately after the broadcast, online communities were filled with criticism such as, “How can they not even write Chinese characters correctly while making a historical drama,” “It shows up just by searching,” “Did they do it on purpose to be funny,” and more.
Later, On the 25th of August, the production team stated, “There was an error in the Chinese character notation during episode 1. We are currently working on corrections, and once completed, the changes will be reflected in rebroadcasts and VOD services.”
They continued, “We will be more careful in the production and review process to prevent this from happening again. We sincerely apologize for the confusion.”
Despite the controversy, “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty” continues to see rising ratings. According to Nielsen Korea, based on nationwide paid households, episode 1 recorded 4.9%, while episode 2 rose to 6.6%, ranking first in its time slot.
“Bon Appétit, Your Majesty” is a survival fantasy romantic comedy about a modern-day chef who time-slips into the Joseon era and encounters the worst tyrant king who also possesses an absolute palate. It airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:10 PM.
