Choo Young Woo, a rising actor currently receiving lots of love for his dramas, addressed the controversy surrounding his SNS follow list.

As his popularity surged, many netizens began to notice his follow list on Instagram and had some things to say about the people he followed. He was following rapper Jung Sang Soo. The controversial rapper is known for driving under the influence (DUI), assault while intoxicated, altercation with police officers, and sexual harassment of specific figures in his rap lyrics. He is also widely known for his support of the far-right civic activism group New Men’s Solidarity, a pro-Yoon Seok Yeol and anti-feminist group.

He also followed gaming streamer KUBIN which gets backlash for posting provocative content. When the issue began gaining attention, fans noticed he began to clean his Instagram follow list.

On the 4th of February, during a wrap-up interview for JTBC’s weekend drama “The Tale of Lady Ok” at a café in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, Choo Young Woo was asked if he ever felt overwhelmed by the sudden surge of public attention. He responded, “First of all, I’m very grateful. I’ve always enjoyed going to cafés and visiting good restaurants with friends, but since both of my recent dramas were released, I haven’t gone out at all.”

He continued, “I haven’t been outside yet, so I’m not sure, but my Instagram followers surpassed 1 million. It’s fascinating, and I still can’t believe this is happening to me. I’m just grateful that so many people like me.”

Recently, a controversy arose over Choo Young Woo following certain influencers and rappers on his SNS. In response to a question about how he felt regarding the issue, Choo Young Woo said, “I realized that with this much attention and love, I need to be more careful with every action and word. My intentions may not always be conveyed as I meant, and misunderstandings can happen, so I’ve become more mindful of that.”

When asked to elaborate on what kind of misunderstanding he was referring to, he explained, “For example, during the press conference, when I told senior actor Joo Ji Hoon that he was ‘smart,’ it could have come across as rude to some people. So I’ve been reflecting on those things and thinking I need to be more thoughtful and polished in my words.”

When the interviewer brought up the follow list again, Choo Young Woo clarified, “There was no special intention behind it. I often watch Reels and Shorts, and somehow it became an issue. I apologize for making people uncomfortable, and I’ll be more cautious in the future.”

Asked if this controversy made him feel discouraged, Choo Young Woo joked, “Don’t I look discouraged? But it’s okay because I can overcome it by doing better. I love acting so much that I can get past these things. It’s a cliché, but I’ll continue working hard to become a better actor and person.”
