Actress Ha Young Returns To Set Of ‘There’s A Chance Of Winning’ Following Backlash Over Family’s Pro-Japanese Past
Actress Ha Young, who faced backlash after speaking proudly about her family history on air without realizing her great-grandfather’s pro-Japanese wartime activities, has returned to filming for her upcoming project, with the production team once again addressing the matter.
On August 20th, the production side of SBS’s new drama “There’s A Chance Of Winning” stated regarding the recent controversy surrounding Ha Young, “We are taking the matter concerning our cast member seriously,” adding, “We are currently in careful discussions from multiple angles with the production company and those involved.” They continued, “We will notify you through official channels as soon as any decisions are made.”
A representative of Ha Young’s agency, B-Sisters Entertainment, told Maeil Kyungjae Star Today that day that she is “continuing with the existing filming schedule,” confirming her return to set. They added cautiously, “We ask for your understanding that we’re unable to share specific scheduling or progress details separately.”
Ha Young had previously paused filming for “There’s A Chance Of Winning” after the controversy broke out. Filming was halted after she reportedly broke down in tears and struggled to compose herself on set, and she is known to have taken about a week off to rest at the production’s consideration. She returned to set that day and is continuing with her scheduled activities.
The controversy began after Ha Young proudly introduced the medical career of her great-grandfather, Ahn Sang Ho, on YouTube and variety programs. Criticism grew after it was revealed that Ahn Sang Ho had served as a councilor for the Daejeong Chinmokhoe during the Japanese colonial era, among other pro-Japanese activities.
Ha Young’s side initially denied the allegations, but corrected its position after reviewing additional records. Ha Young also bowed her head in a handwritten apology, saying she regretted mentioning her family history without properly verifying it first.
Early in the controversy, the “There’s A Chance Of Winning” production had stated, “We are aware of the matter and are closely monitoring how the situation develops.”
The project is currently in production, targeting a first broadcast date of February 26th, 2027.
