Hyun Bin Shares His Thoughts Regarding The Backlash Jung Woo Sung Received For His Acting On “Made In Korea”
Actor Hyun Bin shared his thoughts on the acting-ability controversy surrounding senior actorJung Woo Sung, whom he worked with on “Made in Korea.”
On the 27th of January, an interview with Hyun Bin, the lead actor of the Disney+ series “Made in Korea” (directed by Woo Min Ho), was held at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
“Made in Korea” is set in South Korea during the 1970s, a time when chaos and leaps forward coexisted. It tells the story of Baek Gi Tae (played by Hyun Bin), a man who seeks to rise to the peak of wealth and power by using the nation itself as a profit model, and prosecutor Jang Geon Young (played by Jung Woo Sung), who tracks him to the edge with frightening obsession, as they face massive incidents that cut through the era.
Hyun Bin plays Baek Gi Tae, a senior officer in the Central Intelligence Agency who aims to reach the pinnacle of wealth and power.
At the interview, Hyun Bin was asked about his feelings regarding the situation in which praise for his villain performance after the release of “Made in Korea” was overshadowed by the unexpected acting controversy involving Jung Woo Sung.
Jung Woo Sung plays Jang Geon Young, a prosecutor at the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office who pursues Baek Gi Tae with madness-like obsession. In the process, criticism followed, saying Jung Woo Sung’s shouting-style acting felt awkward. Furthermore, when posts praising Jung Woo Sung appeared online, some raised suspicions of viral marketing, prompting his agency, Artist Company, to state that it was “groundless.”
In response, Hyun Bin began by saying, “There are disappointing aspects,” and added, “What makes it hard to speak is that the disappointment is probably much greater for the senior (Jung Woo Sung) than for me.” He continued, “The reason I say this carefully is because I think all actors are probably like this. In order to digest a role and show it, they really think deeply and put in a tremendous amount of effort in their own way, and regardless of that, I believe they are more aware than anyone of the reactions coming out like that.”
Hyun Bin said, “Since this is a project that doesn’t end with season 1 and continues to season 2, I believe he will think even more and show better sides. On set, no matter what, ‘Jang Geon Young’ to me was my senior, so I thought it was enough to meet the Jang Geon Young he prepared.”
He also hinted at season 2. When asked about the possibility of the story being set in 1979, Hyun Bin said, “There is a lot of room to show different sides. Filming ends in March, but it’s a situation that can change at any time,” expressing difficulty in giving concrete explanations.
Meanwhile, “Made in Korea” released its final episode, episode 6, on the 14th, and plans to present season 2 in the future.
