Hyun Bin Reveals He Gained 13 Kg [30 Lb] For His Highly Anticipated Upcoming Drama
Actor Hyun Bin has revealed his weight gain for his upcoming Disney+ drama “Made in Korea.”
At the production presentation held on the 15th of December at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam, Seoul, Hyun Bin shared, “I’m excited and thrilled to have the opportunity to meet viewers around the world through an OTT platform.”
“Made in Korea” is set in South Korea during the 1970s, a time when chaos and growth coexisted, and depicts the confrontation between a man who seeks to rise to the pinnacle of wealth and power by using the nation itself as a profit model, and a prosecutor who relentlessly pursues him. Hyun Bin plays Baek Gi Tae, a section chief in the Central Intelligence Agency’s Information Department and a man standing at the center of power, while Jung Woo Sung faces him as the tenacious prosecutor Jang Geon Yeong. The series also marks director Woo Min Ho’s first drama, following his films “The Man Standing Next” and “Harbin.”
Hyun Bin said, “Working together on ‘Harbin’ helped build a great deal of trust in director Woo Min Ho. I was happy to work again with a director who brings out new sides of actors.” He also noted that unlike “Harbin,” which dealt with real historical figures, this project focuses on fictional characters and a fictional narrative. He said, “There was a different kind of enjoyment compared to my previous work, where the sense of responsibility and pressure was much heavier.”
Attention has also been drawn to his physical transformation for the role. Hyun Bin explained that he gained approximately 13 to 14 kilograms [around 30 lb] for his portrayal of Baek Gi Tae. “As a character belonging to the Central Intelligence Agency, the most powerful authority of the time, I wanted that sense of intimidation to come across visually as well. I bulked up and built muscle through training.” He laughed as he noted, “This is the biggest physique I’ve had in my acting career.”
“Made in Korea” consists of six episodes. Episodes 1 and 2 will be released on the 24th, followed by episodes 3 and 4 on the 31st, episode 5 on January 7, and episode 6 on January 14.
