Famous Hallyu Actress Denies That A Chinese Commercial Shoot Was Canceled Due To Controversy Surrounding Her Currently Airing Kdrama
Actress Jun Ji Hyun’s side has denied the allegations that a Chinese commercial shoot was canceled due to the controversy surrounding “Tempest.”
On the 23rd of September, one media outlet reported that Jun Ji Hyun was scheduled to film a commercial for a Chinese clothing brand on the 25th in Seoul, but it was canceled following the anti-China controversy sparked by Disney+ drama “Tempest.”
Later on the same day, her agency Peach Company stated, “This advertisement was wrapped up before the release of ‘Tempest.’ The overlap of issues caused a misunderstanding, but the cancellation of the advertisement has nothing to do with the drama.”
In the drama, Jun Ji Hyun plays former diplomat Moon Joo, who, along with nationality-unknown special agent Sanho (played by Kang Dong Won), chases the truth behind a massive incident.
The controversy stems from episode 4 in the drama, Moon Joo says, “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border area,” a line that provoked strong backlash in China, with netizens claiming it “insulted China.”
As a result, advertisements for brands that Jun Ji Hyun models for, such as cosmetics and watches, have been suspended, fueling a growing boycott.
