Rising Actor Jung Joon Won From “Resident Playbook” Addresses Backlash Over Love Line With Go Youn Jung Because Of His Visuals
Actor Jung Joon Won shared his thoughts on forming a romance line with Go Youn Jung in “Resident Playbook.”
Recently, Jung Joon Won sat down for an interview with Star News at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, to talk about tvN’s weekend drama “Resident Playbook” which concluded recently.
In the drama, Jung Joon Won played the role of Koo Do Won, a fourth-year OB/GYN resident at Yulje Hospital in Jongno. Koo Do Won is the cousin-in-law of first-year OB/GYN resident Oh Yi Young (played by Go Youn Jung), but also develops a romantic relationship with her.
Jung Joon Won said, “What made me quietly proud was seeing how the negative reactions at the beginning gradually turned into understanding as the episodes went on. That was such a relief. It brought me comfort and allowed me to let go of some worries.”
The main source of concern and negative feedback from viewers was the romantic line between him and Go Youn Jung. Because Youn Jung is known for her exceptional visuals—often referred to as having “AI-like beauty”—some viewers felt that her pairing with Jung Joon Won was mismatched in terms of visuals or vibe.
He commented on this, saying, “From the viewers’ perspective, there were people thinking, ‘Does it make sense that Go Youn Jung would like that guy (me)?’ I did hear reactions like that. Still, since (Koo) Do Won was portrayed as a genuinely good person, I believed it could be convincing and tried to approach the role with that mindset.”
Jung Joon Won added, “It would be a lie to say I wasn’t hurt. I expected it, but hearing it still made me feel down. But in a way, doesn’t that mean they were at least paying attention? I was thankful because it felt like they cared.”
He also spoke about how he was eventually able to win over viewers despite the initial negativity. “As people continued watching the drama, I think I gradually grew on them. It wasn’t about having a killer scene or anything—it just happened naturally. I think it’s because Do Won was a character you couldn’t hate. That’s the strength of the character,” he said.
