Netizens Demand Actress’s Withdrawal From KBS Drama Over Brother’s Alleged Shocking Crime
The family of a woman who died in a fall from a Busan officetel has posted a viewer petition claiming that the perpetrator’s older sister is an actress currently appearing in a KBS drama, and the petition has gathered 1,000 signatures within a day.
As of 4 PM on September 4th, the petition had received support from around 1,040 people, meeting the threshold for an official response from KBS. KBS is required to respond within 30 days once a petition surpasses 1,000 signatures.
Earlier, on the 3rd, a petition titled “I Am A Bereaved Family Member Of The Busan Officetel Fall Death Victim” was posted on KBS’s viewer petition board.
The author wrote, “I lost my beloved daughter to an unjust death. My daughter suffered relentless stalking from the perpetrator and, in the end, met an unjust death,” adding, “Since that day, time has stopped for me.”
The post continued, “The world feels so indifferent and cruel. The perpetrator’s family, who took my daughter from me, is still living a peaceful, ordinary life,” and claimed, “In particular, the perpetrator’s older sister is currently appearing in a supporting role on a KBS evening daily drama, laughing and crying on screen, going about her work as a beloved drama actress with no apparent difficulty.”
The author appealed, “My family’s daughter died an unjust death, while the perpetrator’s family’s daughter is thriving as an actress. How can the world be so unfair?” adding, “Every time I see that, I’m overwhelmed with guilt as a parent for not being able to protect my daughter. I feel sorry that I couldn’t do anything for my daughter, who passed away unjustly, and it feels like my heart is breaking.”
The post continued, “I ask that you please give even a little attention to a grieving parent’s earnest plea, and remember together with us,” adding, “And I ask KBS: please clarify whether you were aware of these facts, and I request a responsible response as a public broadcaster.”
The petition gained 1,000 signatures within a day of being posted, and a notice on the petition page read, “The person in charge is reviewing the contents of this petition. A response may take up to 30 days, and we will return with a sincere answer.”
Earlier, in January 2024, a woman in her 20s, referred to as A, fell to her death during an argument with her ex-boyfriend, referred to as B, at an officetel in Busan. B claimed that the victim fell after he had already left the residence, but the investigation revealed that he had habitually stalked her — after A informed him of the breakup, he reportedly went to her home and pounded on her door for 17 hours, along with making threats.
B was indicted on charges including special intimidation, property damage, refusal to leave, and violation of the Stalking Punishment Act. Prosecutors sought a 10-year prison sentence at the first trial, but the court sentenced B to 3 years and 6 months in prison along with 40 hours of a stalking treatment program. Prosecutors appealed the ruling as too lenient, and the appellate court handed down a reduced sentence of 3 years and 2 months in prison, along with the same 40-hour stalking treatment program.
It was later reported that B’s older sister is currently working as an actress. While many have sympathized with the bereaved family’s anger and joined the petition, there are also no shortage of opinions such as “the perpetrator and the perpetrator’s sister are separate people” and “what responsibility should KBS bear.”
