Famous Korean Actress Shocks With Admission Of Past Struggles “The Casting Offers Completely Stopped”
Famous Actress Kim Sung Ryung recently opened up about the reasons her casting offers dwindled in the past.
On the January 22 episode of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block,” Kim appeared as a guest and reunited with Yoo Jae Suk after seven years since her last variety show appearance on “Happy Together.” When Yoo asked why she hasn’t been on variety shows often, Kim joked, “You have to invite me first.”
Kim, who recently starred in the drama “Gentle Sales,” shared that her family doesn’t monitor her work. She said, “My mom just likes seeing me work hard. When I ask her, ‘Should I stop working?’ she replies, ‘No, you can do it!'” However, her sons are less interested. She explained, “I told them to watch ‘Gentle Sales’ because it’s fun, but they said no. When I asked them to come to a movie premiere, they refused too.”
About her husband, Kim revealed, “He used to be a manly man, but as he gets older, he’s become more childlike. These days, he keeps complaining about aches and pains.”
Kim debuted as Miss Korea 1988 and recalled, “It was during the Seoul Olympics, so I got to do the parade twice.” Known as the first Miss Korea winner to become an actress, she shared how her career began: “I had no intention of acting, but after appearing in a shoe commercial, director Lee Jang Ho noticed me and recommended me to director Kang Woo Suk.”
Kim won Best New Actress for her debut film, but she admitted to struggling early in her career. When Yoo mentioned that she reportedly reacted negatively to the flood of work, Kim clarified, “I wasn’t annoyed; I think I just felt overwhelmed. It was a blessing, but I had no goals and felt like I was being tossed around.”
Kim confessed, “I think I kept running away. If I was offered an MC role, I’d say I wanted to focus on dramas, and if I got a drama offer, I’d say I was focusing on MC roles.” This led to a decline in casting opportunities. She shared, “The offers completely stopped, and even the roles I got were smaller. Watching old footage of myself as an MC, I didn’t even say a word!”
Kim expressed admiration for fellow Miss Korea alumnae who became successful actresses, such as Yum Jung Ah, Ko Hyun Jung, and Lee Honey. She said, “They’re so good at acting that people don’t even think about their Miss Korea titles anymore. But for me, people still talk about my looks and how I maintain them. I wish people would recognize me more for my acting.”
