“Wonderland’ has dropped from the top 10 movie charts, and despite its glamorous casting, the movie failed to record good ticket sales.

According to the integrated computer network of the Korean Film Council on June 24, the movie ‘Wonderland’ (directed by Kim Tae-yong) recorded 5,817 viewers and ranked 12th at the overall box office during the past weekend (June 21-23), falling out of the top 10 chart.

‘Wonderland,’ which was released on the 5th of this month, is a film that tells the story of meeting loved ones again through an artificial intelligence restoration service that brings back deceased people. Directed by Kim Tae-yong, this commercial film has garnered much anticipation, marking his much anticipated film in 13 years since ‘Late Autumn.’

The film also received attention for its glamorous casting lineup, including Tang Wei, who is married to director Kim Tae-yong, as well as Suzy, Park Bo Gum, Jung Yu Mi, and Choi Woo Shik.

However, it failed to succeed at the box office, with a cumulative audience of only 617,690 people in the third week of its release. This falls far short of the breakeven point, known to be 2.9 million viewers.

The Golden Egg Index, evaluated by actual moviegoers, stands at 81% for CGV, indicating that the viewers express disappointment with the lack of convincing storytelling despite the glamorous cast lineup.

After much anticipation and completing filming in 2021, the film was released after three years, but it failed to attract even one million viewers and practically exited theaters. It is planned to be released on VOD services on the 27th, only 22 days after its theatrical release.

Experts believe changed consumer habits as well as the rise of streaming services are the reason behind the movie failing to generate enough ticket sales.
