Popular Korean Actress Draws In Mixed Reactions For Selling Patented Hair Rollers For A High Price

Actress Ku Hye Sun has revealed a hair roller she participated in developing, and opinions about its price are divided.

In January, Goo Hye Sun shared on her account that the hair roller she helped develop, called “KooRoll,” had officially gone on sale. The product is priced at 13,000 won [$8.73] per piece, while a two-piece set is priced at 25,000 won [$16.78].

Because the price is higher than typical hair rollers sold on the market, some netizens pointed out that “the price may be set too high.” However, there are also voices welcoming the product’s release and supporting her new venture.

“KooRoll” is a product created based on Ku Hye Sun’s ideas and design. In 2024, Ku Hye Sun was accepted into the KAIST Graduate School of Science Journalism for a master’s program in engineering, and she participated in the product’s development together with researchers. It is reported that she came up with the idea after seeing hair rollers that students often wear in their hair.

Last January, when she appeared on MBC’s “Radio Star,” Ku Hye Sun said, “I applied for a patent in order to graduate from Sungkyunkwan University,” revealing that she had registered a patent for a foldable hair roller.

Later, when she appeared again on “Radio Star,” she said, “At the time, I showed the hair roller on the broadcast because of graduating from school. A professor from KAIST contacted me after seeing the hair incident. It turned into a blessing in disguise,” adding, “I ended up launching the hair roller with a KAIST professor. Because of that, I became the CEO of a venture company. I also received a patent grand prize.”
