Lee Dong Hwi appeared on a variety show and shed tears while recalling fellow actor Na Chul, who passed away three years ago.

Although three years have passed since Na Chul’s death, the actor—remembered as a “shining performer”—still lives on in the hearts of his colleagues in the entertainment industry.

On the most recent broadcast of You Quiz on the Block on tvN, Lee Dong Hwi shared his reflections as he entered his 40s, along with heartfelt thoughts about his family and close friends.

Lee Dong Hwi said, “On the day I returned after sending off friends who had gone to heaven and completing the funeral procession, I promised myself that I would live while taking better care of the people around me,” before eventually breaking down in tears.

The friend Lee Dong Hwi referred to was Na Chul, who suddenly passed away in January 2023 at the young age of 36 due to worsening health. When Lee Dong Hwi won Best Supporting Actor at the Blue Dragon Series Awards that same year, he also moved the audience to tears by saying, “I want to share this joy with my younger brother Na Chul, who must be happy in heaven.”

During his lifetime, Na Chul was known among fellow actors for his humble and warm personality. In particular, Kim Go Eun canceled all her schedules and stayed at the funeral hall when news of his passing was announced. Every year on the anniversary of his death, she has paid tribute to him, calling him “the best actor and the coolest person.”

Many other actors—including Byun Yo Han, Uhm Ji Won, and Han Hyo Joo—also remember him as “a precious actor who truly loved acting.” They have shared photos on social media capturing his bright moments during his lifetime, honoring his short but powerful life.

Despite a relatively short acting career, Na Chul left a strong impression and was even called a “genius actor,” going beyond the typical “scene stealer.” He appeared in films such as Extreme Job and 1987: When the Day Comes, as well as major dramas including Vincenzo, Hospital Playlist Season 2, and Stranger 2.

Colleagues say their sorrow is even deeper because he was a star who faded just as he was about to fully bloom.
