The Two Famous Actors Who Expressed Regret Over Controversial Bed Scene In Their Hit Drama
Actors Cha Joo Young and Lee Hyun Wook, who appeared in the tvN and TVING drama “The Queen Who Crowns,” have both voiced their disappointment regarding the controversial nude scenes. Though both actors refrained from speaking too much out of respect for the project and the staff’s efforts, they expressed concerns about insufficient communication with the production team and dissatisfaction with the excessive nudity.
“The Queen Who Crowns” revolves around the relationship between Queen Wongyeong and King Taejong Yi Bang Won, exploring power, ambition, and marital conflict. The drama concluded with a final episode rating of 6.6%, receiving much love from viewers. However, early on, it became a hot topic due to its highly explicit scenes. Controversy arose when reports claimed that the script did not specify the extent of nudity, and actors only became aware of the full content later.
In response, the production team refuted these claims, stating, “We consulted with each actor and their agencies.” They also explained that the nude scenes were filmed with actors wearing clothing, later enhanced through CGI and body doubles. However, this drew criticism, with some likening it to “deepfake crimes.” Reports also surfaced that actors had requested edits to these scenes, but the production team refused.
Cha Joo Young’s Perspective on the bed scene
Recently, Cha Joo Young met with reporters and stated, “This drama tells the love story of a royal couple in the Joseon dynasty. I wanted to portray everything authentically. As an actress, I had no hesitation about depicting a couple’s intimate moments, and I am generally open to bold performances,” she said. However, she added, “Of course, some scenes made me think, ‘Was that necessary?’ I also voiced such concerns on set. While discussions and agreements took place, some aspects were not fully calculated internally. I’d rather not say too much about the level of nudity. This doesn’t only affect me; many things happened behind the scenes.”
She continued, “I feel regretful that the nudity became the main focus. I know this may not be what people want to hear, but it is how I feel.” She expressed confidence in the latter half of the drama, saying, “Though there were concerns early on, I believed that those who watched until the end would understand our intentions. My family watched the tvN version instead of TVING’s because it had less nudity.”
Cha Joo Young also shared how difficult the controversy was for her, saying, “I even worried that the drama might get canceled early. I stayed home the entire time it was airing because I was afraid of the reactions.”
She added, “I wanted to ensure that the historical figures we portrayed were not disrespected. While we couldn’t ignore history, we aimed to bring fresh elements to the story. This project left me feeling both frustrated and apologetic.” She also mentioned that many scenes and lines were changed on set, saying, “Even if I memorized all my lines beforehand, they would often be rewritten on the spot. Sometimes, an entire episode’s worth of script would suddenly be added, leaving me uncertain about how the final product would turn out. In the end, the only person I could rely on was Hyun Wook. We depended on each other until the very last moment.”

Also recently, Lee Hyun Wook gave a delayed interview regarding the drama’s conclusion. He admitted, “I was shocked when I watched the broadcast. Personally, I try to avoid nudity in my performances. Since we were portraying real historical figures, I was worried that it could be seen as disrespectful. Honestly, I don’t have much I can say. I read Cha Joo Young’s interview, and I think we share similar thoughts. The communication between the production team and the actors was lacking, and that is regrettable. Watching the drama made me feel miserable, and I cried a lot.”
He continued, “This experience made me question my acting career. I was even scared to do this interview. It felt like I would never recover from this, but I knew I needed to do it in order to properly close this chapter. If I hadn’t spoken about it, the regret would have lingered.”
