Beloved “Squid Game 2” Actress Lee Joo Sil Passes Away
Actress Lee Joo Sil, who played the mother of detective Hwang Jun Ho (played by Wi Ha Joon) in the Netflix series “Squid Game 2,” has passed away at the age of 81.
On February 2, a representative from her agency, 1230 Culture, told Yonhap News, “Actress Lee Joo Sil passed away this morning due to stomach cancer.”
The representative further explained, “About three months ago, her health deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with stomach cancer after a hospital check-up. She suffered cardiac arrest this morning and was transferred to the Catholic University of Korea Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, but she passed away.”
Debuting as a theater actress in 1965, the late actress appeared in numerous plays such as “Death of a Salesman” and “Macbeth,” earning the title of a leading figure in the theater scene of the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1993, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and was told she had only a year to live. However, after undergoing chemotherapy, she was declared fully recovered more than a decade later.Even during her battle with cancer, she earned a Ph.D. in public health from Wonkwang University.
After her recovery, she actively appeared in dramas and films, including “The Uncanny Counter,” “I Wanna Hear Your Song,” “The Walking Man,” and “Hommage.”Her final work became “Squid Game 2,” in which she played the mother of detective Hwang Jun Ho.Her funeral will be held at Severance Hospital Funeral Hall in Sinchon, Seoul, with the burial scheduled for February 5.
