Actress Lee Se Young (31), who began her career as a child actor, recently shared some of the struggles she faced growing up in the entertainment industry.

During an appearance on the September 25th episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, she reflected on her 28-year acting career and the difficulties she encountered as she transitioned into adult roles.

Lee Se Young explained how her mother initially got her into acting to increase her public visibility during a time when child abduction cases were prevalent. She made her debut in the 1996 drama Brother’s River and the children’s show Bbo Bbo Bbo.

Lee Se Young gained public attention through Dae Jang Geum, portraying the character Keum Young, who was jealous of Jang Geum’s natural taste buds. Lee Se Young recalled, “When I went to school, the boys teased me,” reflecting on the great popularity she gained at a young age.

After gaining fame through Dae Jang Geum, a friend made an anti-cafe. Lee Se Young said, “My parents saw something on the computer and told me, ‘Don’t be too close with that friend,’ but I pretended not to hear.” She added, “One day, at school, other friends told me, ‘That friend made your anti-cafe, and you still hang out with them?’ I asked, ‘Did you really do that?’ and they said, ‘Yes, I did. I’m sorry.’” Despite the apology, that friend continued to be active in the anti-cafe.

Nevertheless, Lee Se Young revealed that she still remains close with that friend, showing her large-hearted nature.

Transitioning from child actor to adult roles proved challenging. Lee recounted how she struggled financially during her university years, doing part-time jobs to make ends meet while trying to secure acting roles. She would frequently visit her agency to maintain her presence, even doing tasks like washing dishes and serving coffee to the staff. To cope with her anxiety, she took up exercising and did 1,000 squats daily.

Despite the hurdles, Lee Se Young’s determination paid off. She successfully transitioned into adult roles and gained wide recognition for her performance in the 2021 MBC drama The Red Sleeve.
