Lee Seung Gi Cuts Ties With His In-Laws Two Years After Marriage To Lee Da In, Here Is Why
Singer and actor Lee Seung Gi has made a major decision after marrying his wife Lee Da In. After two years of marriage, he has chosen to cut ties with his in-laws. Lee Seung Gi made this decision stating that the trust between family members has been damaged beyond repair, and Lee Da In, after much consideration with her husband, supported this decision.
According to legal circles on the 29th of April, the Financial and Securities Crime Joint Investigation Division of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office (Chief Prosecutor Ahn Chang Joo) received a detention warrant from the court the previous day for Mr. Lee, Lee Seung Gi’s father-in-law and the man married to actress Kyeon Mi Ri, on charges of violating the Capital Markets Act.
It is known that during the investigation of a stock price manipulation case involving the KOSDAQ-listed company Quantapia, which had been reported by the Financial Services Commission, prosecutors discovered evidence linking Mr. Lee to the manipulation. Previously, prosecutors indicted a group of nine people on charges of manipulating stock prices by promoting Quantapia’s quantum image sensor business to raise stock prices and gaining unjust profits amounting to around 20 billion KRW. They were found to have manipulated the stock prices of Quantapia and Joongang DnM by leaking advance information about mergers and acquisitions between the two companies.
Before this news was made public, Lee Seung Gi issued a statement through his agency. He stated, “Although my father-in-law was once sentenced to a fine in a remanded trial over continuously raised illegal activities, due to similar violations he has again been prosecuted by investigative authorities.” The “similar violations” mentioned by Lee Seung Gi appear to refer to Mr. Lee’s involvement in the Quantapia stock price manipulation case.
In addition to being linked to the Quantapia manipulation case, Mr. Lee was also indicted for artificially inflating the stock price of another KOSDAQ-listed company, Company A, where he served as a director from 2014 to February 2016, and then selling off his shares acquired through paid-in capital increase to gain profit. The Supreme Court overturned a previous acquittal of Mr. Lee and three others in June of last year and sent the case back to the Seoul High Court.
Before marriage, Lee Seung Gi had been criticized for being entangled in these negative issues. At the time, he defended his in-laws, saying, “Embezzling 26 billion won through stock manipulation and creating 300,000 victims? That’s clearly false reporting. I don’t know where certain reporters and YouTubers are getting their information, but it’s entirely baseless.” When the Supreme Court returned the case for retrial, he said, “I earnestly ask that you not touch my family. This matter occurred before marriage and is something the family must resolve.”
However, at the production briefing for the film Big Family, Lee Seung Gi’s stance had changed slightly. He said, “Some of my past remarks may have led to the misunderstanding that ‘the family did nothing wrong.’ What I have consistently meant is that matters related to my in-laws are their matters, and after marriage, my parents, my wife, and I have formed an independent household separate from my in-laws. I don’t think it’s appropriate to add anything more about this matter. If my comments caused misunderstandings, I realize I must act more cautiously.”
Through this, Lee Seung Gi, showing a rift within the family, ultimately chose “severance.” He stated, “As someone who waited for the results based on trust among family members, I am devastated by the illegal actions of my father-in-law. This incident has damaged the trust between our families to a level that is difficult to recover from. After long deliberation, my wife and I have decided to sever ties with my in-laws.” This implies that the severance with his in-laws was not only Lee Seung Gi’s decision, but also one supported by Lee Da In.
Lee Seung Gi further stated, “I deeply reflect on my past careless remarks made last year without fully examining the matter regarding my father-in-law. I believe that illegal actions must be met with appropriate punishment. I deeply sympathize with the victims who may have suffered due to my hasty judgment and sincerely apologize. I also feel nothing but remorse toward all those who trusted and understood me. From now on, I will strive to uphold proper values and live with a sense of responsibility for a healthy society.”
