MBC Cancels The Blu-Ray Production Of “Perfect Crown” After Historical Inaccuracy Controversy
The Blu-ray production for MBC’s drama “Perfect Crown” has officially been canceled following the controversy surrounding historical inaccuracies.
On June 15, the drama’s Blu-ray production team announced through its official fan cafe, “After comprehensively reviewing various circumstances, we regret to inform you that the Blu-ray production has been officially canceled. We ask that everyone refrain from speculation or excessive assumptions regarding unconfirmed information.”
Previously, following the drama’s conclusion, the production team had begun accepting pre-orders for the Blu-ray in response to fans’ requests. However, the project was ultimately scrapped as it failed to overcome the fallout from the controversies that persisted throughout the broadcast. All pre-order payments will be canceled in full on June 18.
Set in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy, “Perfect Crown” drew major attention before its premiere thanks to its star-studded cast, including IU and Byeon Woo Seok. However, shortly after airing, the series became embroiled in criticism over the lead actors’ performances and serious historical inaccuracies.
The biggest controversy stemmed from a coronation scene involving Grand Prince Ian. Despite the drama’s fictional nation being portrayed as a sovereign state succeeding the Korean Empire, the king was shown wearing a “Guryu Myeollyugwan” (a nine-tassel crown traditionally worn by rulers of vassal states) instead of the imperial “Sibimyeollyugwan” (a twelve-tassel crown worn by emperors). Additionally, officials were shown shouting “Cheonse” instead of “Manse,” sparking strong backlash from viewers.
As the controversy intensified, director Park Jun Hwa, writer Yoo Ji Won, other production staff members, and the lead actors all issued public apologies. Nevertheless, the drama ultimately concluded its run under a cloud of criticism, with the cancellation of its Blu-ray release adding another disappointing chapter to its aftermath.
