Netflix Says They Didn’t Authorize Any Korean Political Party To Use “When Life Gives You Tangerine” After Conservative Party Parody
Netflix has issued a firm response stating that no permission was granted for the parody poster of “When Life Gives You Tangerines” used in a political campaign by presidential candidate Kim Moon Soo of the People Power Party.
On June 3, a Netflix representative told Sports Chosun, “There was no separate authorization given regarding the promotional material parodying ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines.’” The parody poster in question mimicked the official spring version featuring IU (as Ae Soon) and Park Bo Gum (as Gwan Shik), which has become a popular subject of parodies lately. According to reports, Netflix had been monitoring the growing number of such imitations.
On June 2, Kim Moon Soo posted the parody on his social media, captioned, “To those who are still like flower petals and still dreaming. ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’ grand release on June 2!” The poster featured altered images replacing the original lead actors’ faces with those of Kim Moon Soo and his wife, Seol Nan Young, drawing widespread attention online.
Public reactions were mixed—while some netizens defended it by saying “What’s the problem?”, others criticized the move with comments like “Don’t use popular shows for election purposes.”
“When Life Gives You Tangerines” originally premiered on Netflix in March and has since been broadcast globally in over 190 countries, earning widespread popularity.
