“Perfect Crown” Issues Apology Upon Conclusion Due To Backlash Over Alleged Historical Distortion
MBC’s drama “Perfect Crown” has sparked controversy over alleged historical distortion due to certain settings and lines in the show, leading the production team to issue an apology.
On the 16th of May, the production team posted a statement on the official website, saying, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern due to issues related to the world-building and historical accuracy.”
They continued, “We take seriously viewers’ concerns that the scene depicting the king (played by Byeon Woo Seok) wearing the ‘Guryumyeonryugwan’ during the coronation ceremony, while courtiers shout ‘Cheonse,’ undermines the nation’s sovereignty.”
The production team explained, “This reflects a failure to carefully examine how Joseon-era etiquette evolved throughout history. ‘Perfect Crown’ is both a romance drama and an alternate history piece. We needed more careful and in-depth consideration in how fictional and historical elements intersect, but we fell short in refining the world-building.”
They concluded, “We humbly accept viewers’ criticism and will promptly edit the audio and subtitles of the controversial scenes in reruns, VOD, and OTT versions.”
In the 11th episode aired the previous day, the second son of the royal family, Prince Ian, ascends the throne after a series of events. However, the coronation scene drew criticism from some viewers after courtiers shouted “Cheonse” (used for vassal states) instead of “Manse,” and the king was seen wearing a crown resembling the Guryumyeonryugwan, traditionally associated with subordinate states, rather than the twelve-jeweled crown used by sovereign rulers.
