A Popular Historical Kdramas Actor Reportedly Abandons Elderly Mother In Nursing Home

A Renowned historical drama actor A has come under fire for allegedly neglecting his elderly mother suffering from dementia, leaving her stranded in a nursing home.

On the January 17 episode of SBS’s investigative program Curious Story Y, the story of an elderly woman, Choi (alias), unable to leave a nursing home on the verge of closing, was revealed.

The nursing home, facing financial struggles, had been scheduled for closure, requiring its residents to relocate. However, Choi remained stranded, with over 13 million won (approximately $8,900 USD) in unpaid nursing fees accumulated over a year. Worse, since last fall, she had lost all contact with her family.

The nursing home director expressed grave concerns, stating, “Without the guardian’s consent, we cannot discharge her. The issue isn’t just the fees; the real problem is where she will go.”

The elderly woman reportedly spent her days charging her phone and repeatedly writing down her son’s phone number, hoping to hear from him.

The actor A, who debuted in the early 1980s as a public broadcaster talent and gained fame through various TV programs, is said to have fallen into financial ruin due to the failure of his restaurant business, which left him heavily in debt.

When the show’s producers eventually reached A, he explained, “I was looking into every possible way to resolve the unpaid nursing fees, which is why I couldn’t stay in touch.”

He added, “I am suffering from panic disorder and depression, which makes it impossible for me to interact with people,” denying the allegations of neglect.
