SBS Reveals Their Plans To Extensively Use AI In Their Upcoming Dramas, So Ji Sub’s Upcoming Drama Contains A “Lengthy AI-Generated Sequence”
SBS dramas are showing strong confidence. After achieving ratings success in the first half of the year with works such as “Taxi Driver 3,” and more, SBS plans to target viewers in the second half of the year with a diverse lineup of new dramas including “Manager Kim,” “Flex x Cop,” “Doctor X,” “Good Partner 2,” and “Nine to Six.”
While presenting both its strength in seasonal dramas and new productions, SBS also revealed confidence in the quality and completion of future dramas by incorporating AI innovation technology into production.
On the morning of the 1st of June, SBS held its drama media day event, “SBS DRAMA: NEXT EPISODE,” at Hotel Naru Seoul MGallery. Attendees included Studio S CEO Hong Seong Chang, SBS Programming Director Kim Gi Seul, actor So Ji Sub and director Lee Seung Young, and actors Lee Je Hoon and Ha Young along with director Kwon Da Som of “We Have a Chance.”
Since the launch of Studio S, SBS has planned and produced more than 60 well-made productions over the past six years. Mega-hit dramas such as “Stove League,” “The Penthouse,” “Dr. Romantic,” “Taxi Driver,” and “The Fiery Priest” all surpassed 20% viewership ratings, helping SBS maintain its position as the ratings leader.
One of the biggest topics at the event was the use of AI technology in drama production.
Hong Seong Chang said Studio S began AI education early and that many directors who were initially resistant changed their views after learning more about it. He explained that AI should be viewed as a creative support tool that allows creators to realize ideas that would otherwise be impossible.
SBS plans to disclose whenever AI is used in a production and intends to show fully AI-generated footage in upcoming projects. According to Hong, AI is being adopted not only to reduce production costs but also to create scenes that would otherwise be impossible or too dangerous to film.
He revealed that “Agent Kim Reactivated” contains a lengthy AI-generated sequence and that the cost was reduced by more than 60% compared to traditional production methods.
Director Lee Seung Young, who used AI on “Agent Kim Reactivated” said the technology’s strengths and limitations are both clear. He noted that AI has advanced rapidly over just five months and believes it could eventually help directors create dangerous or large-scale scenes more effectively.
However, he also pointed out its limitations, saying that AI still struggles to recreate the physical realism, atmosphere, and human presence of real-world filming. For that reason, it was used selectively only in scenes where its weaknesses would be less noticeable.
