tvN’s “Signal 2” Reportedly Set To Release In November Amid Jo Jin Woong’s Controversy, tvN Responds
“Signal 2”, which fans have waited 10 years for, has again fallen into uncertainty. Reports of a November broadcast slot emerged, but tvN stated “nothing has been confirmed.”
On the 30th, one media outlet reported that tvN’s new drama “The Second Signal” had confirmed a Monday-Tuesday broadcast schedule for November 30, and that Jo Jin Woong‘s scenes would air without editing.
However, tvN immediately stated “nothing has been confirmed.” Their position is that neither the broadcast schedule nor how to handle Jo Jin Woong’s scenes has been officially decided.
“The Second Signal” is the sequel to “Signal,” which aired in 2016. The original was widely loved for its story of past and present detectives connected via walkie-talkie to solve cold cases. Just the news of Season 2 being in production raised fans’ expectations greatly.
The problem is lead actor Jo Jin Woong.
Jo Jin Woong announced a suspension of activities and retirement last year after his past juvenile criminal record became known. At the time, his agency apologized, confirming “there were wrongful actions committed during his minor years.”
“The Second Signal” had already completed filming last year. The production team is known to have reviewed various options including AI editing and re-editing, but has yet to reach a clear conclusion.
Viewer reactions are also divided. As a sequel 10 years in the making, there is anticipation from those who say “I want to watch the show,” while many others say “it’s uncomfortable to watch the controversial actor as-is.”
The weight of the “Signal” brand is also deepening tvN’s dilemma. Season 1 set a new standard for genre dramas, recording peak ratings of 13.4%. The reunion of writer Kim Eun Hee, Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hye Soo, and Jo Jin Woong alone generated significant buzz.
However, nearly a year after filming ended, the release date has still not been set. Whether to edit out Jo Jin Woong, keep him as-is, or find another solution remains the biggest variable for “Signal 2.”
