A Woman In Her 40s Falsely Claims One Of The Biggest Hallyu Actors Is Surveilling And Threatening Her, Gets Suspended Sentence
A woman in her 40s who wrote hundreds of false online comments claiming actor Gong Yoo was threatening and surveilling her has received a suspended prison sentence.
According to Newsis on July 29, the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 5 sentenced a 48-year-old woman (identified as “A”) to six months in prison with two years of probation for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (Defamation).
The court stated, “The claims made are not only groundless, but she continued to spread these falsehoods over a long period of time. Even though the victim is a public figure and naturally receives public attention, the nature of the offense is extremely malicious.”
They added, “Although she has been convicted of similar offenses twice in the past, the court considered that she acknowledged her wrongdoing and promised to seek treatment at a hospital.”
Despite having no personal connection to Gong Yoo, the woman accessed a live broadcast he hosted on January 14, 2020, around midnight and posted false comments such as “I’m being threatened behind the scenes, and not a single day goes by without being threatened” and “He harasses me to the point of neurosis.” These comments were deemed damaging to Gong Yoo’s reputation.
Reports indicate she went on to post similar defamatory comments and messages online 235 times up until March 21, 2021.
