Popular Kdrama’s Portrayal Of Molka Filming Slammed For Being Inappropriate, Here Is Why
The drama “Would You Marry Me” has sparked debate among viewers after its recent episode featured a scene depicting an illegal filming incident [molka].
In episode 6, which aired on the 25th of October, Yoon Jin Kyung (played by Shin Seul Gi) was performing CPR on a cardiac arrest patient in a park when a man secretly filmed her with his phone. Witnessing this, Baek Sang Hyun (played by Bae Nara) handed her his coat, saying, “Cover yourself,” before continuing the CPR himself. He then caught the offender, confiscated his phone, and warned, “Illegal filming can get you up to seven years in prison or a 50 million won fine. If forensics find more, you’ll be treated as a habitual offender. Even rich parents can’t save you from that.”
After checking the phone and deleting the footage, he added, “I’ll let you go this time since it seems to be your first, but next time, there’ll be no mercy.”
Following the broadcast, some viewers criticized the direction of the episode, saying it was insensitive in handling the issue. Many pointed out that although the victim was a woman, the focus was placed on the male character’s actions and judgment, while the offender was not reported to the police, something they deemed an inappropriate narrative choice.
The controversy intensified when SBS’s official channel uploaded the scene as a short video titled “Gold spoon hidden camera offender who secretly filmed Shin Seul Gi — Bae Nara’s satisfying punishment.”
Meanwhile, “Would You Marry Me” is a romantic comedy about Kim Woo Joo (Choi Woo Shik) and Yoo Merry (Jung So Min), who fake a marriage for 90 days in order to win a luxury newlywed home. Episode 6 achieved a peak viewership rating of 9.7%.
