Popular “Squid Game” Actor Attends Conservative Pastor’s Religious Event, Gets Backlash, Agency Issues Clarification Following Backlash
“Squid Game” Actor and rapper Yang Dong Geun is facing controversy after attending an event hosted by a conservative pastor, prompting his agency to release a statement.
On August 1, Yang Dong Geun posted a Bible verse on his social media that read, “Wash it whiter than snow.” He also uploaded a short performance clip, adding the caption, “It was such a graceful time.”
Yang Dong Geun attended a youth and young adult summer camp held from July 28 to 31 at Saegero Church in Busan, alongside members of the CCM performance team K-Spirit.
However, the event sparked criticism from some online users due to the church’s senior pastor, Son Hyun Bok, who is known for his strong conservative stance and has led rallies opposing President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment.
Some fans expressed disappointment, leaving comments such as “This is disappointing” and “Is he supporting martial law now?” Others countered with, “It’s just a religious event” and “Don’t link his faith to politics.”
In response, Yang Dong Geun’s agency, Jo Entertainment, told MHN, “There was absolutely no political intent. He has no connection with the church or its pastor. As a devout Christian, he frequently participates in religious events.”
Yang Dong Geun, who began his career as a child actor, continues to be active both as an actor and musician. He recently appeared as Yong Shik in seasons 2 and 3 of the Netflix series “Squid Game” and also voiced the character Peter in the film “King of Kings.”
