Yoo Ah In Released From Prison After 5 Months Following Appeal Trial Probation Sentencing

Actor Yoo Ah In, who has been on trial for habitual drug use, has been released after receiving a suspended sentence in his appeal trial. With his pending projects still in limbo, attention is now focused on whether he can return to the industry.

On February 18, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 5 held an appeal trial for Yoo Ah In and his acquaintance, Mr. Choi, who were indicted on drug-related charges. The court sentenced Yoo to one year in prison, suspended for two years, along with a fine of 2 million won. He was also ordered to complete 80 hours of community service, undergo drug treatment, and pay an additional 1.54 million won in forfeiture.

Previously, in September last year, Yoo Ah In was sentenced to one year in prison during his first trial and was immediately taken into custody due to concerns about a potential escape. Although he was a first-time offender, the severity of his drug use and frequency led to a harsh sentence.

As a result, the release of Yoo’s two completed films, The Match and High Five, was indefinitely postponed. High Five was initially planned for a 2022 release, while The Match was expected to premiere on Netflix in the second quarter of 2023.

However, on February 17—just a day before Yoo’s appeal verdict—The Match announced its official release date of March 26 and revealed a new poster, signaling its upcoming premiere. This was a reversal from previous statements saying the film’s release was on indefinite hold due to contractual issues. Meanwhile, High Five is still awaiting further developments.

During his fourth appeal hearing on December 24, Yoo Ah In pleaded for leniency, saying, “I deeply regret all my mistakes. I have lost a lot, but I have also gained valuable lessons. I sincerely ask for a chance to prove myself in society. I will be cautious, sincere, and determined. I will not succumb to any temptations and will face the world in a more mature and healthy way.”
