“Dynamite Kiss” Episodes 1 And 2 Review- Very Stereotypical, But Fun

“Dynamite Kiss” starring Jang Ki Yong and Ahn Eun Jin has finally premiered, so let us discuss the 1^st two episodes and my thoughts on them.

“Dynamite Kiss” is a very stereotypical k-drama romance story about two people who meet under not-so-good circumstances and somehow form a partnership of lies then end up falling for each other. The only difference here is they speed run through the entire part of falling for each other to get to the actual plot line in which their worlds collide again as they’re forced to work together.

“Dynamite Kiss” is penned by two screenwriters, one of whom has two prior works. One is the underrated “Mystic pop-up bar,” which I remember enjoying. The main ideas are as stereotypical and cliché as they come in every sense of the word. Some parts I feel were more tolerable than others.

The parts I struggled to tolerate were the ones pertaining to the character of Da-Rim and the portrayal of her. It appears to be so pathetic it borders on comical and not in the best of ways. These types of scripts generally have the same basic female character, and that annoys me. I am not saying such characters should no longer be portrayed/written, but the manner in which she’s written got under my skin. I just felt it was humiliating, but portrayed/taken lightly in some areas, and by that I mean the tone of some scenes.

On the more tolerable side, I liked how the two characters seemed on the same page early on. I like that it didn’t take them much time to realize they were falling for each other, either. That was my favorite part, which seemed to add a layer of maturity to what could otherwise be described as a rather basic script that targets teens to people in their young 20s, not that its wrong to target this group… but if we were to apply this realistically, I feel it could go similar to what happened early on.

My favorite parts of the premiere were Ki Yong and Eun Jin. Both are ridiculously talented and cute on their own, and together, they’re too sweet for me. I loved their chemistry together, and Ki Yong is knocking it out of the park with his comedic acting. The poor character is in for a ride when he finds out she’s ‘married.’ He’s gonna have the most valid crashout ever, and it’ll be both kinda sad and hilarious, watching him grapple with the fact that he fell for a married woman with a child who supposedly lied about all of this.

I think if you approach “Dynamite Kiss” as a lighthearted kdrama that you don’t overthink, you’ll enjoy it. This will be the type of approach I’ll take as long as the script doesn’t get too ridiculous for me.

The drama will be 14 episodes long, which is a choice… this drama airs in the dreaded Wednesday-Thursday timeslot that SBS is now trying to revive. I believe this drama will hit well with international audiences, and I don’t know how good the reception will be nationally. Still, they have their work cut out for them, as this time slot, regardless of the broadcasting station, is a very difficult time slot.

Anyways, excited to see the crashout of Jang Ki Yong’s character next week.
