PD Ahn Joon Young Rejoins Mnet After Serving His Sentence For The “Produce” Voting Manipulation Controversy
PD Ahn Joon Young, who manipulated the “Produce” series, has rejoined the channel Mnet.
On April 3rd, a Mnet official told My Daily, “It is true that PD Ahn Joon Young rejoined the company,” and “It is difficult to confirm the exact time,” and added, “PD Ahn Joon Young left the company last year.”
Producer Ahn Joon Young is the director of the “Produce” series, which produced the project groups I.O.I, Wanna One, and IZ*ONE. As the “Produce” series became a hit, he gained a reputation as a producer specializing in survival programs.
However, right after the live broadcast of the final episode of “Produce X101” in 2019, allegations were raised that the difference in votes between the 11 X1 members who were finally selected as the debut group was repeated in a regular pattern, raising suspicions of vote manipulation.
A police investigation began and PD Ahn Joon Young admitted the charges four months later. In addition, from 2018 to 2019, he was also accused of receiving tens of millions of won from five entertainment agency officials on several occasions.
Accordingly, in 2020, the first trial court sentenced PD Ahn Joon Young to two years in prison and an additional fine of 37 million won. Producer Ahn Joon Young appealed but was convicted in both the first and second trials. Later, he went to the supreme court.
At the time, PD Ahn Joon Young admitted to the facts but appealed for leniency, saying, “The defendant had no purpose of gaining personal benefits,” adding, “Please take into account that it was a process for the completeness of his program.”
Later, in 2021, PD Ahn Joon Young was released from prison after serving his full sentence of two years in prison.
