Famous Duo AKMU Leaves YG Entertainment After 12 Years, Why?
AKMU has parted ways with YG Entertainment after 12 years since debut.
YG Entertainment stated through an official announcement on the 21st of November, “AKMU, after deep consideration, has decided to carry out their music activities in a new environment,” and added, “We sincerely support their future.”
According to YG, about six months ago, executive producer Yang Hyun Suk visited the home where siblings Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Su Hyun live, had dinner with them, and shared an honest conversation. Looking back on the 12 years of memories from the moment they first met at the 2012 audition for “K-Pop Star Season 2,” they naturally discussed the concerns AKMU currently carried.
AKMU had only one concern: whether to continue walking with YG or to try new musical experiments through independence. In this process, it is said that Yang Hyun Suk instead encouraged the siblings, saying, “Leaving YG and doing music in a new environment could also be a good experience.” He also expressed that he would “support them from behind regardless of what they choose,” respecting AKMU’s decision.
After winning “K-Pop Star Season 2” in 2013 and choosing YG, releasing their first full album in 2014 with “200%” and “Give Love” and leaving behind numerous hit songs, they have established themselves as a “trusted and listened-to sibling duo” over the past 12 years.
YG stated, “Being able to watch AKMU’s growth up close was also a great joy for the company,” and expressed deep gratitude to AKMU for gifting amazing music and emotion over the years.
AKMU also expressed affection during their final farewell, saying, “We are forever YG family.” It is said that they delivered a handwritten letter directly to Yang Hyun Suk.
YG said, “AKMU is always family,” and added that they will actively support them if there is anything needed in the future. They continued, “We ask for lots of interest and warm support for AKMU, who now stand at a new starting line.”
