The “MBC Gayo Daejejeon,” now marking its 20th anniversary has hired a new MC after 10 years.
The “Gayo Daejejeon” is South Korea’s biggest year-end music festival, broadcast live every December 31 and continuing into the first moments of January 1. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the show being held under the name “MBC Gayo Daejejeon.”
As this year’s event celebrates its 20th milestone, anticipation is higher than ever. To honor the two-decade legacy, the production team made a bold and refreshing decision.
The spot long held by Girls’ Generation’s Yoona (Im Yoona), who has hosted for the past 10 years, will now be filled by Annie from the co-ed idol group ALLDAY PROJECT.
Annie, who made her debut only six months ago, will take on the role of MC for “Gayo Daejejeon,” becoming the new face to lead this year’s final night.
Upon the casting news, many netizens expressed skepticism, and soon allegations of nepotism started circulating.
PD Jang Woo Sung, who is directing this year’s show, told Sports Chosun, “After Yoona stepped down from her 10-year position, we thought deeply about who could take her place.”
He continued, “We’re in an era where K-pop is drawing global attention. That meant the new face of Gayo Daejejeon had to be a rookie who represents this generation — someone the world is watching. In that sense, Annie was the most natural choice.”
PD Jang praised Annie, saying, “Since her debut, Annie has shown smart and charismatic leadership. She has captivated public attention in a short time and embodies what it means to be an icon of this new era.”
However, Annie’s selection also drew mixed reactions due to her high-profile background as a “third-generation heiress of Shinsegae Group.” Addressing the concern, PD Jang said, “Annie is an artist proving herself through her work. It’s impressive how she’s been building her own identity in just half a year since debut.”
The “2025 MBC Gayo Daejejeon” will air live on December 31.
