ATEEZ member Hongjoong’s rap lyrics in his recently released collaboration single, SMB, with American rapper Odetari, have drawn attention for potentially targeting HYBE’s internal controversies and its chairman, Bang Si Hyuk.

On January 15, Hongjoong dropped SMB, which immediately became a hot topic due to its provocative lyrics.

The lyrics in question include phrases like:

  • “No fun at all,”
  • “Act your age, lazy bum,”
  • “You think you’ve made it, hitman,”
  • “If you have time to observe others, watch your own back,”
  • “Du-Du-Du, bang,”
  • “Blinded by jealousy,”
  • “Spewing insults with names.”

Fans and netizens speculated that the line “hitman” and “bang” might refer to HYBE’s chairman, Bang Si Hyuk, who is famously known as “Hitman Bang.”

This speculation ties back to a controversy in October 2023, when a leaked HYBE internal document, titled Weekly Music Industry Report, revealed disparaging comments about the appearances of idols from other agencies. The document contained harsh remarks such as, “They debuted members at their most awkward stage, none of them have idol-worthy visuals,” and, “Shockingly, none of them are attractive.”

The leak led to significant backlash and HYBE’s CEO Lee Jae Sang issued a public apology, admitting the document’s content was “extremely inappropriate” and recognizing the company’s failure to ensure internal oversight.

In response to these speculations, KQ Entertainment told TV Report on January 16, “We have no official statement.”

With Hongjoong’s SMB lyrics now stirring debate, many are wondering whether the song serves as a subtle critique of this past controversy. Fans continue to dissect the lyrics while awaiting further clarification from KQ Entertainment.
