It has been belatedly revealed that BTS member Jungkook fell victim to identity theft, leading to the unauthorized transfer and sale of his stocks.

According to reports from the music industry recently, Jungkook had a total of 33,500 shares of HYBE stock stolen shortly after his military enlistment in January last year. At the time, the stolen shares were valued at approximately 8.4 billion won [around $5,730,346].

The perpetrator illegally opened a securities account under Jungkook’s name, transferred his HYBE shares without authorization, and sold some of them. Specifically, 33,000 shares were moved to a newly opened account, while the remaining 500 shares were sold to a third party.

However, Jungkook’s agency, BigHit Music, quickly recognized the issue and took immediate measures, including freezing the account, to prevent any substantial financial damage.

BigHit Music stated, “As soon as the company and the artist became aware of this crime, we took action, such as freezing the account and restoring the stock holdings, to prevent any actual losses.”

Jungkook filed a civil lawsuit in 2024 to reclaim the 500 shares that had been transferred to a third party. Last month, the Seoul Western District Court ruled in favor of Jungkook, ordering the third party to return the shares.

However, and to the shock of fans, the identity of the perpetrator who committed the identity theft has yet to be discovered.

BigHit Music also stated, “Apart from the legal actions, we have reinforced security measures regarding the artist’s personal and device-related information to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.”

Jungkook enlisted in December 2023 and is currently serving as an active-duty soldier in the army. He is expected to be discharged in June.
