TRENDING: Famous Korean Celebrity Under Investigation For Using Proxy To Receive Prescription Drugs, Agency Explains
It has been reported that famous celebrity A received prescriptions for psychotropic drugs through non-face-to-face treatment and had them proxy-received through a manager.
On the 27th of August, “KBS News9” exclusively reported, “The police booked A and the attending doctor on charges of violating the Medical Service Act and conducted a search and seizure of the hospital to secure medical records.”
According to this, A received prescriptions for anxiety disorder and insomnia treatment at a general hospital in Seoul since 2022. The prescribed medicines are known to be the sleeping pill ‘Stilnox’ and the anxiety disorder treatment ‘Xanax.’ These are psychotropic drugs that, under the relevant law, must be prescribed after a doctor’s direct medical examination.
However, A is suspected of not receiving face-to-face treatment from the doctor and of having managers proxy receive the medicines when collecting them.
Under the Medical Service Act, except for special cases such as when the patient is unconscious, proxy receipt of psychotropic drugs is strictly prohibited. Also, even in cases where proxy receipt is necessary, it is exceptionally allowed only to family or caregivers.
Regarding this, A’s agency explained to KBS, “Starting from the COVID period, A has been receiving prescriptions through non-face-to-face treatment, and afterwards, due to busy schedules such as performances, continued to receive prescriptions non-face-to-face. Although the medicines were received by proxy, they were prescribed in A’s own name, and the medicines were not overdosed nor used for any purpose other than the prescribed one.”
Later, other media outlets reported that the Seoul Seodaemun Police Station recently received a complaint calling for the criminal punishment of celebrity A on charges including violation of the Medical Service Act and has launched an investigation.
Along with this, it has been reported that university professor B, who prescribed the drugs by proxy, has also come under police investigation. In addition, B is said to have denied the related suspicion, claiming that he conducted the treatment non-face-to-face.
The police plan to investigate the detailed circumstances against A.
