Famous Kpop Idol Wears T-Shirt With The Confederate Flag Despite Having Lived In The U.S., Agency Issues Apology
Singer Mark, formerly of NCT, has come under heavy criticism from domestic and international fans after wearing clothing featuring the Confederate flag, a symbol associated with support for slavery in the United States. His agency has since issued an official apology.
On the 23rd of June, Mark’s one-person agency, Upper Room, released an official statement through social media.
“We sincerely apologize for the concern, discomfort, and disappointment caused by the vintage T-shirt seen in recently released photos.”
The controversy stemmed from a Confederate flag design displayed on the front of a vintage T-shirt worn by Mark. Photos of the idol wearing the t-shirt went viral after it was shared. Fans were horrified upon seeing the photos and criticized the idol who was born in Canada and later moved to the U.S.
The Confederate flag was the official flag of the Confederate States during the American Civil War, representing the Southern states that seceded from the Union in support of maintaining slavery. Over time, it became widely associated with white supremacy, racism, and far-right extremist groups, and its public display remains highly controversial.
Addressing the issue, the agency stated:
“The clothing was selected simply as a vintage fashion item. However, after recognizing the historical meaning and sensitivity of the symbol displayed on the T-shirt, we took measures to ensure that the symbol would not be exposed in official content.”
The statement continued:
“Regardless of intent, we acknowledge that this matter should have been handled with greater care and caution. We take full responsibility for this oversight.”
“Upper Room and the artist firmly oppose and do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination, or any form of prejudice.”
The agency concluded:
“We fully recognize the seriousness of the concerns that have been raised and sincerely regret the hurt and discomfort this incident may have caused. To prevent similar situations in the future, we will strengthen our internal review procedures regarding wardrobe selection and content approval. We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt hurt, offended, or disappointed by this matter.”
