A rapper who was formerly part of a male idol group has been sentenced to prison in the first trial for charges related to illegally filming his girlfriend during sexual intercourse.

On the 30th of August, Judge Hong Da-seon of the Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 4 sentenced Mr. Choi (28), a former member of an idol group, to 1 year and 6 months in prison for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (illegal filming and distribution). Additionally, the court ordered him to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program and imposed a 3-year employment restriction at institutions related to children and adolescents. The judge also ordered his immediate detention in court, citing concerns of potential flight risk.

The court stated, “Illegally filming the victim’s naked body is an act that causes extreme sexual humiliation. If such illegal filming is distributed, it could cause irreparable harm to the victim.” Although Mr. Choi made a criminal settlement offer, the victims rejected it and requested severe punishment.

The court also considered the fact that there was no evidence of distribution of the recordings and that Mr. Choi had no prior record of similar offenses in determining the sentence.

Mr. Choi was charged with repeatedly filming scenes of sexual intercourse and private body parts of Ms. A, whom he dated from July 2022 to May 2023. It was revealed that he encouraged the victim to wear a blindfold during sex and secretly used a silent camera app to film without consent. There were three victims in total.

In May, the prosecution requested a 3-year prison sentence for Mr. Choi. However, Mr. Choi pleaded for leniency, stating, “I fully realize how shameful and wrong my actions were.”

Mr. Choi debuted in 2017 as a member of a five-member idol group but ceased activities in 2019 due to health reasons. The group is currently inactive following member departures.
