f(x) Member Luna Talks About The Passing Of Sulli, Going Through Difficult Times And How Her Family Helped Her

Former f(x) member Luna has opened up about her painful past and the tragic passing of Sulli.

On the July 15 broadcast of KBS1’s “Morning Forum – Tuesday Invitation,” Luna made a guest appearance and candidly shared her story.

She began, “My mother majored in vocal music, but during the IMF crisis, she gave up her dream of singing and helped my grandmother run a soondae soup restaurant. After years of working in the kitchen, she inhaled a lot of gas and developed chronic bronchitis. Because she handled soondae a lot, her fingernails were stained black. When I was little, I used to wonder why my mom’s hands weren’t pretty like other moms’. I didn’t like it. But when I turned 14, I suddenly felt so sorry for her. That’s when I wanted my mom and dad to live comfortably and chase their dreams—and that desire became my biggest motivation. From the age of 14, I practiced every day without a single day off.”

With her family in mind, Luna became an idol and achieved major success with f(x). But in 2019, when she was 25, she hit a wall. That year was especially painful as the group experienced the tragic passing of member Sulli.

Luna shared, “From age 25 to 35, I was sick. During that time, I barely saw anyone. I just worked when I was awake and tried to rest at home whenever possible. I couldn’t be alone, so my mom and older sister accompanied me to every single schedule to take care of me.” She added, “I almost gave up being a singer and idol, but my mom told me, ‘You’ll always have a place to come back to, so even if you fail a little or fall short, just try everything you want to do.’ That’s what helped me endure for five years.”

Having overcome her struggles, Luna is making a comeback through the musical Mamma Mia!. Veteran actress Choi Jung Won, who previously worked with Luna on Mamma Mia!, was inspired after watching her perform as Ophelia in the play Hamlet, and said she wanted to act together again as Donna and Sophie.

Luna will meet fans in Mamma Mia! at LG Art Center Seoul from July 26 to October 25.

Born in 1993, Luna is now 31 years old. She debuted in 2009 as the main vocalist of f(x), releasing hits like “LA chA TA,” “Hot Summer,” and “Electric Shock.” However, f(x) effectively disbanded after 2016, and Luna parted ways with SM Entertainment in 2019.
