Hearts2Hearts Members Issue Apology After Wig Stunt Sparks Racism Backlash

Hearts2Hearts (H2H) members Jiwoo, Jooeun, and Yeon have issued an official apology following a racism controversy sparked by a wig prop they wore on a Japanese variety show.

Jiwoo, Jooeun, and Yeon of Hearts2Hearts each posted apology statements written in both Korean and English on the fan communication platform Weverse on August 14th.

The controversy stemmed from an episode of the Japanese variety show “Congratulations! Hearts2Hearts’s Japan Debut Owarai Dojo,” which aired on the Japanese OTT platform ABEMA on August 12th. During the broadcast, while carrying out a comedy mission, the members wore Afro-style wigs provided as props and performed a Michael Jackson routine, which drew criticism from some overseas fans who felt it mocked a specific race and culture.

Jiwoo said, “While filming, I wore the wig without really stopping to think about what it represented or how hurtful it would be. I’ve been listening and learning from what everyone has shared, and I understand why it was wrong. I’m truly sorry. I, along with all of the members, will be more thoughtful and mindful moving forward.”

Jooeun said, “I’ve taken some time to reflect on my actions, and I realize that I should have been more thoughtful and careful in that moment. I never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone, but I understand that my actions may have caused hurt, and I’m truly sorry. I’ve learned from this experience, and I’ll be more thoughtful and mindful of my actions going forward.”

Yeon said, “Through this, I’ve had a chance to reflect and learn more about the impact my actions can have, even when there was no intention to hurt anyone. I understand that I need to be more thoughtful and aware of how my actions may affect others. I’m truly sorry to anyone I may have hurt or disappointed, and I’ll be more mindful and responsible moving forward.”
