MAMAMOO’s Hwasa Speaks About How A Tough Breakup Led To The Creation Of Her Hit “Good Goodbye”

Singer Hwasa spoke about the breakup that led her to create the song “Good Goodbye.”

Recently, a video titled “A Conversation Behind the Stage of Good Goodbye” was uploaded to the YouTube channel Logos.

Hwasa met composer Park Woo-sang, who worked on “Good Goodbye,” and talked about the emotions and stories behind the song. Hwasa said, “This year I lived listening only to ‘Good Goodbye.’ Around the summer I stopped listening to it for a month or two because it was too hard. It felt like I might throw up. I wanted to make this song perfect, and since there was still time left, I really felt like I might throw up. After not listening to it for two months and then hearing it again, I fell in love with it as if I were hearing it for the first time.”

Park Woo-sang commented,“I saw a comment saying that whenever Hwasa goes through something, she goes to Park Woo-sang. It was like that during ‘Maria’ too. Big emotions clearly come during turning points in life.”

Hwasa agreed, saying, “That’s right. Maybe that’s why working on songs is so hard.”

She then spoke about the “good breakup” that inspired the song. Hwasa said, “When I was breaking up, I wondered what this feeling was. I couldn’t say anything. I was too overwhelmed. No words could properly end that final moment. It started with the thought, ‘Why can’t I say anything right now?’”

She continued, “Because of that frustration, I kept being unable to speak. What could I possibly say? To someone who shared the finale of my life, someone who went through a whole chapter of my life with me, what could I say to them? Thinking about that was so painful. At first the song was just called ‘Goodbye,’ right? When I said that word, it felt like everything suddenly cleared.”

Meanwhile, in December 2024, Hwasa was rumored to be dating a businessman who is 12 years older than her, and reports said they had been in a relationship for five years. She neither confirmed nor denied the rumors at the time. However, in March last year, she appeared on the YouTube channel “Naraesik” with Park Na-rae and Han Hye-jin and hinted at a breakup by saying, “All three of us are single right now.”
