HYBE Issues An Apology Following BTS Gwanghwamun Concert

HYBE apologized for the inconvenience caused to citizens and nearby businesses during BTS’s Gwanghwamun concert, particularly due to traffic control, building restrictions, and security checks.

On March 22, the agency released a lengthy statement addressing the mounting backlash. In their statement they also thanked fans for showing up at the concert. HYBE also explained these measures were unavoidable to ensure safety for a globally broadcast event.

Below is HYBE’s statement:

“We sincerely thank you for the warm support and consideration you showed for BTS’s performance held yesterday at Gwanghwamun.

First, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the authorities for allowing us to use Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun, which symbolize the Republic of Korea, as the concert venue.

We are well aware that Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun are places where Korea’s history, identity, and modern culture coexist. HYBE feels greatly honored to have been able to present a performance to the world at this location.

We would also like to sincerely thank the government and local officials, including the police and fire departments, who worked hard to ensure the safe completion of this performance.

We extend both our apologies and gratitude to the citizens, nearby merchants, office workers, and visitors in the Gwanghwamun area. As this was a performance watched by the entire world, unavoidable measures such as traffic and building control and security checks for dangerous items had to be implemented. We sincerely apologize to everyone who experienced inconvenience in their daily schedules and routines while passing through Gwanghwamun Square. Thanks to your understanding and consideration, we were able to create a meaningful moment.

K-pop has grown into a culture that connects with the world thanks to artists and fans, as well as the cultural foundation built by Korean society and the mature support of its citizens. We are well aware that this performance was possible because of that foundation. The orderly viewing, civic awareness, and consideration for one another made this performance shine even brighter. We once again express our sincere gratitude to everyone.

HYBE will cherish the support and consideration shown for this performance and will continue striving to deliver the emotion and value of K-pop and K-culture to the world. In particular, we are grateful that we were able to introduce our proud cultural heritage through this performance, and we will work closely with related organizations to quickly develop and implement concrete plans for the protection and promotion of national heritage and cultural assets as part of a long-term support system.

Once again, we sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the Gwanghwamun performance.

Lastly, we extend our condolences to all those affected by the Daejeon fire incident. We express our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
