Ahead of the comeback of the group BTS, political interpretation controversies arose as major landmarks in Seoul were lit in red, prompting the agency to clarify.

HYBE, the parent company of BigHit Music, BTS’s agency, stated on the 18th of March, “The red lighting for the Gwanghwamun Square performance applies the key color of the ‘Arirang’ album.”

They added, “Seoul City is also using red lighting at HYBE’s request, and we ask that public cultural events not be interpreted excessively from a political perspective.”

BTS will hold a comeback performance to celebrate the release of their fifth studio album, “Arirang,” at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the 21st at 8 PM.

Accordingly, on the 20th, the day before BTS’s comeback, and on the 21st, the day of the performance, Seoul City will illuminate 15 major facilities, including Namsan Seoul Tower, Lotte World Tower, Cheonggyecheon, Sebitseom, Seoul Botanic Park, Gayang Bridge, and World Cup Bridge, in red.

Because the lighting was done in red instead of BTS’s signature purple, some have pointed out that it evokes the color of a particular political party, particularly, the far right party, linking it to Seoul mayor Oh Se Hoon’s party.
