Singer and actress IU recently opened up about a health condition that has drawn concern from her fans. She revealed that she suffers from Skeeter Syndrome, an allergic reaction to mosquito bites.

On December 19, IU appeared on the YouTube channel Yoo In Radio with her close friend, actress Yoo In Na, sharing various stories. During a game, IU was asked, “Would you prefer hearing mosquito noises all night while trying to sleep or waking up bitten all over without hearing any sound?” IU replied, “I’d rather hear the noise.”

She explained, “As Yoo In Na knows, when I get bitten by a mosquito, the area swells up like a lump, and I need antibiotics. It oozes and eventually the skin becomes necrotic. After looking it up, I found out it’s called Skeeter Syndrome. It causes redness, severe swelling, and blisters over a wide area.”

IU also mentioned, “Mosquitoes always bite my face, leaving scars. The places where I was bitten badly as a child still have dead skin, and there’s no sensation in those spots even if poked with a needle. I dislike mosquitoes way more than cockroaches.”

What is Skeeter Syndrome?
Skeeter Syndrome is a severe allergic reaction to mosquito bites, with prevention being the primary management method as there’s no specific cure. If bitten, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. Severe cases can lead to anaphylactic shock. Doctors often prescribe antibiotic ointments or steroid creams to alleviate symptoms.

IU previously shared another health concern, Patulous Eustachian Tube Syndrome, a condition where the eustachian tube remains abnormally open, causing self-generated sounds to resonate in her ears. This also drew sympathy from fans.

Meanwhile, IU successfully wrapped up her world tour this year, further solidifying her position as a singer. In 2025, her Netflix series is set to premiere. Additionally, she will star alongside Byeon Woo Seok in MBC’s upcoming drama “21st Century Wife of a Great Prince” (working title), showcasing her versatility as an actress.
