Following The Suicide Of A Beloved MBC Weathercaster, This Famous Broadcaster’s Name Gets Roped In, He Responds

After the tragic suicide of MBC weathercaster Oh Yoanna, broadcaster Jang Sung Kyu’s name was brought up prompting him to respond publicly.

On February 5, Jang Sung Kyu took to social media to address the issue. He shared screenshots of malicious comments directed at him and his family, along with a long message.

The controversy began when Oh Yoanna passed away in September 2022 at the age of 28. Allegations of workplace bullying soon surfaced. YouTube channel “Garo Sero Institute” cited the family’s claims and named four weathercasters—Kim Ga Young, Lee Hyun Seung, Choi Ah Ri, and Park Ha Myung—as those responsible.

Recently, a conversation from a group chat involving the four weathercasters was leaked. The chat reportedly included a reference to Jang Sung Kyu.

According to the reports, Oh Yoanna had confided in Jang Sung Kyu, saying she felt isolated at work. In response, Jang asked the members of the chat what was happening. After that, the chat participants allegedly criticized Oh Yoanna.

Once this was revealed, netizens flooded Jang Sung Kyu’s social media and his “Workman” YouTube channel with comments like, “You should have protected her privacy,” and “You were insensitive.” This eventually led Jang to restrict comments on his accounts.

Jang took to his SNS to write this and said, “I only learned about the late Oh Yoanna’s tragic news in December. I’m sorry for only mourning her in my heart. Although it’s late, I hope her unfair situation is resolved so that she can rest in peace and that her family can find comfort. If there’s any way I can help, I will do my best.”

He continued, “When my name was first mentioned, I was upset because the information was not true. However, I remained silent, thinking my pain was nothing compared to what the deceased and her family must have endured. Unfortunately, my silence was interpreted by some as an admission, and malicious comments began to appear on my social media.”

Jang added, “Eventually, the hateful comments extended to my family. To protect them, I restricted comments to followers only. This led some to assume I was guilty, and the intensity of the attacks increased. I believe it would be wrong to try to clear up my small injustice before the late Oh Yoanna’s situation is fully resolved. However, I sincerely ask that you refrain from attacking my family until everything is clarified.”
