Former After School member Kahi has opened up about her heartbreaking family history.

On June 16, a video was uploaded to the YouTube channel Saeropge Hasoseo CBS. In the video, Kahi appeared as a guest and shared deeply personal stories from her life.

That day, Kahi spoke about her family background. “I was born the third of four siblings. After giving birth to my older sister, brother, and me, my mom developed severe herniated discs. Because of that, she left me in the care of my maternal grandmother.”

She continued, “From the moment I was born, I was raised by my grandparents. When I returned home at age three, I didn’t even recognize my own mother—I said, ‘Who is that lady?’ That’s how little connection we had. On top of that, my younger sibling had already been born, so I guess my mom didn’t have the time or energy to care for me. There was zero maternal affection. I don’t think I ever felt protected in that household.”

Because she didn’t feel loved at home, Kahi said she sought love elsewhere. “Home felt like a survival stage. It never felt like a place of safety. And my father was quite violent. He was extremely patriarchal, with a rough and aggressive personality.”

She went on to say, “One day, my mother was beaten by my father so badly that the blanket was soaked in blood. I remember seeing her quietly washing it in the bathroom.” Kahi wiped away tears as she continued, “Because of all that, I didn’t get love from my sister either. My brother also used to hit me. Getting beaten was just normal. There’s no object I haven’t been hit with. My mom used sticks, water hoses, belts, even hangers.”

Despite all this, she tried to understand her mother’s situation. “I guess my mom had no room to breathe. I wasn’t an obedient child either. I wanted the same kind of love my grandparents gave me, but I couldn’t get it, so I even turned to stealing. I think, to my mom, I was just a troublemaker who never listened and only caused grief.”

Kahi added, “There was a time when my father failed in business and couldn’t provide for the family. If it had been me, I think I would’ve run away. My father has since passed away, but I think it’s amazing my mother stayed with him and never got divorced.”
