Former Member Of Famous SM Group Announces Return After 7 Years Of Self-Reflection Due To Various Controversies
Former Super Junior member Kangin has announced his return after about seven years of self-reflection following controversies involving drunk driving and assault, sparking mixed reactions.
Recently, a video titled “Kangin’s Self Interview” was uploaded to his YouTube channel.
In the video, Kangin began by saying, “Hello everyone, this is Kangin. It’s been a really long time since I’ve greeted you.”
He shared that he recently held a fan meeting tour starting in the Philippines and revealed that he had written his own song, saying “Although it wasn’t fully completed yet, I had the opportunity to briefly let fans hear a song I made.”
Regarding the release of his new song, he explained, “Thanks to the support I received at the venue, I gained the courage to properly share it with you this time. I had a lot of time, but thinking about the fans who have waited for such a long time, I decided to release it as a digital single.”
He added, “Being able to sing again and releasing this album are all thanks to you. I sincerely thank you. I will work hard to greet you with a better image in the future. Thank you once again.”
Online reactions to Kangin’s comeback have been divided. Some netizens responded critically, saying “You didn’t need to find the courage,” “Is this really courage?” and “Wow, this is really surprising,” suggesting he still needs more time for reflection. Others showed support, commenting “He’s reflected enough by now,” “He lost a lot of weight preparing for his comeback, I support him,” and “I hope he actively promotes now.”
Kangin debuted in 2005 as a member of Super Junior but faced controversy in 2009 due to a drunk driving incident and later enlisted after a period of self-reflection. After his discharge, he attempted to return to activities but was fined 7 million won following a second drunk driving incident in 2016.
In 2017, he was also involved in an assault case, and after ongoing controversies, he voluntarily left the group in July 2019. Since then, he met fans through a fan meeting in Mexico last March and has continued overseas fan tours this year.
