KBS Issues Apology After Backlash Over Spreading False Information Related To NewJeans’s Ongoing Lawsuits With ADOR
The group NewJeans got caught up in a broadcast with false information and, as controversy arose, KBS issued an official apology.
On the 27th of August, KBS posted an apology on the viewers’ petition board.
KBS said, “On the 8th during the in-depth interview segment of KBS 1 Radio ‘Success Economy with Lee Daeho,’ while having a discussion with an external guest about the ‘current status and outlook of the entertainment industry,’ there was mention about NewJeans’ lawsuit situation and music release that was different from the facts. We sincerely apologize to NewJeans, fans, and listeners for causing confusion.”
Previously, in the broadcast, a securities company researcher appeared as a panel and said things such as, “It was concluded that NewJeans would belong to ADOR. NewJeans also accepted it. NewJeans released an official song under NJZ.” However, this was content different from the facts.
After the broadcast, on the viewers’ board, posts criticizing such as “They broadcast lies as if they were facts,” “They didn’t even check facts that can be known just by searching,” continued, and many petitions urging prevention of recurrence were posted.
Accordingly, KBS posted an apology on the program’s homepage and YouTube channel and said that the problematic video was edited and deleted. Also, all related articles were deleted.
KBS lastly said, “To prevent recurrence of similar cases, we will strengthen the broadcast verification procedure. We will strictly follow broadcasting norms and make sure such things never happen again.”
Meanwhile, NewJeans, last November, notified contract termination claiming ADOR’s violation of exclusive contract and began independent activities. However, as the court granted ADOR’s request for “preservation of agency status and prohibition of signing advertisement contracts,” a stop was put on it. The members appealed, but it was not accepted, and in the end they are in a state of suspended activities.
