Beloved Korean Singer Shares Her Struggles With Nerve Paralysis And Constant Hospital Visits
Kim Yoonah, the vocalist of Jaurim, has shared an update on her ongoing battle with congenital immunodeficiency.
On the 18th of March, Kim Yoonah posted a hospital photo with the caption, “20250314 Auxiliary Battery Day.”
In the picture, she is lying on a hospital bed with an IV drip, referring to her treatment day in a lighthearted way by calling it “Auxiliary Battery Day,” showcasing her positive and humorous outlook on the process.
Previously, Kim Yoonah revealed her struggle with cranial nerve paralysis in a speech on the YouTube channel Sebasi Talks last year.
She shared, “After producing Jaurim’s eighth studio album in 2011, my immune system became extremely weak, leading to cranial nerve paralysis. I have congenital immunodeficiency and still undergo monthly treatments. At that time, the paralysis affected my sense of smell, taste, hearing, touch, temperature sensitivity, as well as facial and upper body muscles, including the vagus nerve.”
She continued, “Some functions haven’t fully recovered due to lingering effects of the paralysis. I still experience slight vocal difficulties, which I try to suppress with effort. Fortunately, my hearing and muscles have improved enough for me to continue working, but since that experience, I always feel like each project might be my last.”
In September last year, Kim Yoonah also spoke about her condition on SBS’s Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 – You Are My Destiny, explaining, “Because my immunoglobulin levels are low, I have to receive intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) injections every month. I rely on antibodies from healthy adults to strengthen my immune system.”
She added, “Since I have a chronic illness, my doctor warned me that I must get enough sleep. For people with weak immune systems like me, a single lapse can be critical. In the past, I went through a period of extreme overwork and sleep deprivation, which led to my cranial nerve paralysis.”
Meanwhile, Kim Yoonah has been married to dentist Kim Hyungkyu since 2006, and the couple has one son.
