The Kris Wu Shocking Prison Photo Is AI Generated, Korean Media Reveals

A photo that spread online as a recent look at former EXO member Kris Wu (Wu Yifan in China) in prison has reportedly been edited.

Claims that Kris Wu, who is serving a 13-year prison sentence for sexual crimes, has changed beyond recognition set the internet on fire, but the photo is said to have been edited based on footage from the past.

Recently, a photo spread on overseas social media and online communities with claims that Kris Wu gained weight rapidly during his time in prison. The person in the photo looked noticeably different in face and body from his past slim image, drawing interest as to whether it was a real look at him in prison.

However, according to foreign media reports including Singapore’s 8days, the photo was not taken recently, and was edited based on a screen from a 2015 interview video in which Kris Wu appeared. It is said that his appearance in the old footage was altered to make it look like he gained weight after being imprisoned.

This is not the first time rumors have spread about Kris Wu’s condition in prison. In November last year, a rumor also spread that he had died in a Chinese prison. At the time, an anonymous user online claiming to be his fellow inmate posted that Kris Wu had died from an assault or after a hunger strike, which grew the controversy. However, the claims were not verified, and there was no official announcement of his death from local authorities.

A photo of him in a prison uniform that spread on social media at the time was also pointed out as an edited image. Unverified rumors, from claims that Kris Wu had died to stories of rapid weight gain in prison, have appeared repeatedly.

Kris Wu debuted as a member of EXO in 2012, left the group in 2014, and then worked as a singer and actor in China. In 2021, he was arrested on sexual crime charges involving multiple women, including minors.

In 2022, the Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing, China, sentenced Kris Wu to 13 years in prison on charges of rape and group licentiousness. Specifically, he was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group licentiousness, and was ordered to be deported to Canada after serving his sentence. His appeal was later rejected, and the sentence was finalized.

Various rumors, including death rumors and appearance changes, continue to circle Kris Wu, who is serving a prison sentence for sexual crimes, but caution is needed before accepting photos and claims spreading online as his actual condition. As this photo is also reported not to be a real image of him in prison, attention is once again turning to online rumors about his condition.
